India to deliver 5,000 tonnes diesel to Bangladesh amid global energy crisis

India is set to deliver a significant consignment of 5,000 tonnes of diesel to Bangladesh this Tuesday, marking a critical step in maintaining the neighboring nation's energy security. Muhammad Rezanur Rahman, Chairman of the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC), confirmed that this delivery is part of a broader long-term agreement. Under this pact, Bangladesh is scheduled to receive a total of 180,000 tonnes of diesel to stabilize its domestic fuel reserves.

This strategic shipment comes at a precarious time for the global energy market. The ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has caused severe disruptions in fuel supplies worldwide. With 20-25% of the world’s seaborne oil passing through the Strait of Hormuz, the current maritime blockades and production cuts have sent oil prices surging, making this bilateral supply from India even more vital for Dhaka.

The BPC Chairman emphasized that the agreement mandates at least 90,000 tonnes of diesel to be imported within a six-month window. Following today's 5,000-tonne arrival, the corporation aims to accelerate the process, hoping to complete the entire six-month quota within the next 60 days. This proactive move is intended to shield the Bangladeshi economy from the volatility of international oil markets.
